| Bonnygate, Cupar, Fife - - Ross 363 & Vol IV 358 There are three simple attached dials on Preston Lodge which was built in 1623. Two of the dials are on the South elevation. One on each of the projections. The dial on the North-East projection retains its gnomon but the dial on the North-West projection does not. The third dial is on the East elevation and has also lost its gnomon. Visited 12 May 2006 - Author |

This dial was very easy to see. I almost did not go to see it as I was desperate to see if the amazing facetted dial at Melville House had been restored. However, I actually was driving past it and there was a car park immediately opposite. I paid just 20p for about 2 hours parking! It was so cheap I immediately liked Cupar even more than I already did. I was glad that I stopped later as when I reached Melville House there was no dial at all. My confession regarding this dial is that I already knew of the building from a previous visit to Cupar when visiting the Hill of Tarvit and Scotstarvit. However, I had somehow managed to miss all three of the dials. Cupar is an old burgh town and still has several fine historic buildings other than Preston Lodge such as the Chancellor's House, the Corn Exchange, the Old Parish Church (St Michael of Tarvit) and the Mercat Cross which dates from 1683. The other highlight of Cupar is that there is a Fisher and Donaldson bakers as in St Andrews. Have a ring donut or a crumpet - they are delicious. |
