Ross' description of this dial was as follows: 'It is an old dial-stone in the shape of a cube, with a circular hollow on top and square sinkings on the side. A portion of the stone is left standing in the hollow on the top to act as a gnomon, and there is a gnomon of steel on one side, and a stone gnomon on another side. The dial measures 11.5 inches square by 11 inches high' The father of the present owner had the top gnomon replaced in 1984 by George Higgs of Kirkcudbrightshire. Mr Higgs used a cement based material for the replacement and during his restoration decided that the sundial was originally designed for the Wick area. Prior to its restoration it was used as a plant pot. Following its restoration it was temporarily placed on a reconstituted stone plinth but this has now removed. The gnomon of steel mentioned by Ross is not present and there is no evidence for it with all the gnomons made of stone. |
