| Glamis Castle was reputedly the scene of Macbeth's murder of King Malcolm II in 1031. It is the seat of the Earl of Strathmore, whose ancestors were deputy governors of The Royal Bank of Scotland. Her Majesty the Queen Mother spent her early years there and Princess Margaret was born in the castle, the last member of the Royal Family to be born in Scotland.

Visiting Glamis Castle is very simple as it is open to the public. www.glamis-castle.co.uk A top tip for visiting Glamis Castle - Glamis is pronounced Glarms Another top tip for visiting Glamis Castle is to NOT attempt to do it by ordinary public bus. I tried that from St Andrews and it took MANY hours and three or four changes of bus to travel the extremely short distance. It was particularly annoying when we tried to catch the last bus home and it never came - but we did get to walk up to the village of Glamis which was beautiful and full of wreaths of smoke from the chimneys. We should have stayed at the pub in Glamis which looked warm and cosy. Maybe next time...... |

A random but rather fun thing is that The Royal Bank of Scotland £10 note shows Glamis Castle on the reverse. I found it very funny to pay for a cup of tea in the tearoom at Glamis with a Glamis £10 note - strangely the lady wasn't so amused.
