King's Park

King's Park, Glasgow - NS596602 - Ross 472/4 - Stev 256

A Victorian copy of an amazing dial at Newbattle Abbey. It was made in 1889 for Lord Home at Douglas Castle, Douglas, South Lanarkshire. It was given to the Glasgow Corporation in 1931 when the castle was demolished.

I was living in Glasgow only about an hour from this dial for many years. However, distances in the city you live always seem further than those outwith it. Perhaps you think that you can go to see it anytime so you should see something more exotic and further afield. Instead I left it until the week I was moving away from Glasgow and had far better things to do than seeing a dial like packing boxes and finding a new home. The shame of not having seen this after years of being just down the road drove me to go.

It was fun - but not half as much as the original at Newbattle Abbey near Edinburgh. If only because there are two of the original and I missed having the other.

Incidently the red marks on the brick wall in the distance are where graffiti has been 'discretely' painted over. It's an attempt but perhaps it would have been better to paint the whole wall.
