Scotscraig

Fife - NO 447283 - Gatty 107, Ross 436

The cross dial of Archbishop Sharp.

Listed by Somerville as a lectern due to its equatorial dial.

The pedestal was still in the walled garden in 1982 but the dial was stored in a nearby bothy. Somerville doubted whether this was the original as both the stone and its lines were very fresh and clear.

There is no date but there is a contemporary gateway with Archbishop Sharp's initials dated 1667.

Visited 7 September 1982 - A. R. Somerville

The dial originally stood in the courtyard of the old mansion house but the house was removed and the courtyard converted to a walled courtyard. Admiral Maitland Dougall remounted the dial on its present pedestal.

Despite being unusual (and highly appropriate for an Archbishop) this dial is not unique. There are others in England such as that at Shenstone Churchyard near Lichfield.

The above drawings were done by the Dundee architect, Mr T. S. Robertson.
