Hill of Tarvit

Ceres, Fife - NO 381119

Cube dial in Gardens to the rear left. Somerville points out that the plinth seems to be a carved gatepost.

There is a SE vertical dial on the garden elevation of the house. It is contemporary with the house which was designed by Lorimer in 1906.

I just stumbled on this old dial during a trip to see the Hill of Tarvit house by the architect Lorimer and Scotstarvit Castle which was nearby. The house was rather a disappointment being a rather heavy and uninspiring piece of early twentieth century work. It shows the state of Scottish architecture during those lean times that this building is highlighted in books of Scottish architectural history.

Disappointed by the house I took a walk in the grounds and stumbled on this dial which is rather crude, incorrectly orientated and on an ill-fitting pedestal. Perhaps it is that this dial was moved from another estate by Lorimer (who was keen on doing that). I had thought that I discovered this dial but of course Somerville beat me to it.
The nearby Scotstarvit Tower was wonderful. I had to get the key from the Hill of Tarvit house which meant that when I got there and opened it up I locked the door and was king of my castle. The rain came on so I sat and had my lunch, read the paper and generally made myself at home.
