Inch House

2+ Missing/Destroyed

Edinburgh, Midlothian - NT 277708 - RCAMS - Ross 496 - Gatty 163, 216, 258, 277, 450

There are or were many dials here.

An elegant Facet Dial - A Cube Dial - 2 Stained Glass Dials - 2 Wall Dials

The facet dial which was thankfully recorded in the engravings below was missing when sought by Somerville. It is not known when or why it went missing. The dial was a simple and clever design showing its early seventeenth century design. The way the octogan is worked into the square is simple in conception and very effective. It had 12 dials in total with the West and East dials containing heart shapes.

The cube dial from Craigmillar Castle and dated 1660 may be an unfortunate case of a fairly recent loss of a dial. Pevsner's 'Edinburgh' of 1984 says that it is North East of the house and recent photographs of it exist. However, when Somerville visited in 1986 it was gone!

The two stained glass dials were recorded by Gatty (214, 341) and one was designed by Ross. A fire in 1979 destroyed all of the stained glass but earlier photographs seen by Somerville show no dials.

The two wall dials over the front door are thought to date from the buildings restoration in 1891.

In 1986 there was the lecturn dial from Saughtonhall in store in the Nursery to the rear of the house.

It is shocking that I haven't tried to find this dial. I even lived in Edinburgh and passed nearby when hunting after other dials. I blame confusion. It is very easy to get confused when all the source data that you're using is rather old or lacking in the little luxuries of information that we are so used to in this internet age. What would have been really handy was a website that gave me all the information that I needed.......

Does the house or dial even survive?

A little research reveals that Inch House does survive (I rather gave the game away by including a recent image of it) and is now the Inch Community Education Centre. The building is A-listed and is safely in the bounds of Inch Park.

Seems like a nice easy one to visit from Edinburgh and try to find.
