Stroud

Marling School, Stroud, Gloucestershire

A rhomboid 12-sided prism with hollow dials on all faces and balanced on one corner on top of a plinth.

This dial was formerly at Inveresk Lodge but was moved to 'Meredith Court', Gloucester then to 'Inveresk' Bisley and then was given to Marling School, Stroud.

The dial appears to show signs of restorations. The stone of the dial and the majority of the plinth is rather newer looking than the dated lower steps of the plinth and so may be a rather recent, extensive restoration.

I rather under estimated the distance to Stroud from where I was staying on holiday in Salisbury. It took a good two and a half hours to get there and then we only stayed ten minutes! Thankfully the dial was actually there. The school was wonderfully friendly although the sight of several hundred boys racing out from their lunch was enough to scare us off. It was pointed out that the dial is in a small garden away from the boys and perfectly safe.

There are two dated layers to the plinth. The upper is dated 1691 and is inscribed 'Tak tent o' time ere time be tint' and bears the monograms WAH and MB. The lower is dated 1889 and has two mottoes and '1897 Inveresk Lodge Meredith' on the West side and the date 1889 (which is the foundation date of the school) on the South side.

Stroud was interesting in that it seemed to be trying to rebrand itself into a fairtrade town to try and redirect the flow of trade back towards the high street and away from the supermarkets. I had a delicious, organic cheese and bacon omelette that convinced me that they are onto a good thing.
