Aberdour Castle

Aberdour, Fife - NT 192853 - Ross 492

A horizontal dial on a square pedestal that rests on four balls.

The four balls detail is very similar to the pedestal of the dial at Pitreavie. Not only is this because of the supportive stone balls but also the raised pavement which is circular here at Aberdour Castle and octagonal at Pitreavie.

At Aberdour Castle there is also a dignified facetted dial and a very worn attached dial.

The image shown is the illustration given by Ross. It shows the dial with a backdrop of Aberdour House which is close to Aberdour Castle and was where the Earls of Morton moved to by 1725 after leaving the castle. The dial is thought to have travelled with them and has now been returned to Aberdour Castle.

The castle is now in the care of Historic Scotland which means that the dials are easy to visit.
