Dunino

Dunino Church, Dunino, Fife - NO541109

Very crudely cut and now very weathered and missing its gnomon.

I was very surprised to find the dial covered in coins, freshly picked daisies and even a piece of coloured quartz. Clearly it has some recent meaning to someone beyond a sundial. Interestingly the obelisk at Stirling Castle also had coins placed on it. What is going on?

The photographs shown are not mine as when I visited Dunino I was a dedicated 35mm SLR owner and did not yet know the glories of digital. I was very happy to find images of it on the internet - The Megalithic Portal.

Somerville classified a dial at Dunino as a facet but had not visited it. His was 'a sculptured stone re-used as a dial. Dated 1698' and I think this is the same dial but that it should probably be classified as a horizontal.
