Bangor

Ireland

The only known Scots dial in Ireland is not a facet, obelisk or lectern but a 'Bonar'.

A remarkable dial which is very different to all the dials on this website by other makers. The maker was John Bonar, a schoolmaster from Ayr, who constructed an amazing series of dials at the beginning of the 1600s. They are so distinctive they are generally just called Bonar dials.

Many thanks to Michael Harley for these images and information. His website on the sundials of Ireland is well worth a visit and was an inspiration and spur for this site.
