The illustration of this dial by Thomas Ross is particularly flattering. It is so flattering it was the image Somerville used for the cover of his book - The Ancient Sundials of Scotland. It was that image which led me to journey to Largs by train followed by a couple of miles pleasant walk to get to Kelburn Castle.

Before I set out the weather was beautiful with only light clouds very high in the atmosphere but by the time I reached Largs it was solidly 100% cloud cover with no wind to offer hope of change. No sun when trying to see a sundial makes the journey virtually useless but ever the optimist I chanced it.

There are two obelisk dials at Kelburn but while I could easily find one in a (private) garden despite asking lots of people I couldn't find the other. It was very frustrating. I will have to go back again (preferably when the sun is shining).

Another wonderful and surprising thing to do in nearby Largs is to go to Skelmorlie Aisle. It's the most incredible little bit of hidden architecture in Scotland. Well worth it.

While sat on the sea wall in Largs watching the world go by I got talking to a random old man. He turned out to have worked with my grandfather and was very interesting. However, his wife soon dragged him reluctantly away.
