Stirling Castle

Stirlingshire - NS 789941 - Stev 269,279

Merely part of the shattered shaft of an obelisk. 3 Panels whole but the 4th is broken. No inscription or date can be seen on the surviving portion. In the small Douglas Garden behind the Royal Chapel. Someville reports it to be under repair at the time of his visit.

A lovely day out with a friend and his partner. I was their tour guide for Stirling. Holy Rude, Argyll's Lodging and of course the wonderful castle. The sundial some how crept into the tour.........

Why are there coins on the plinth? Here there are only three but I went to see a rustic horizontal dial in Dunino where the entire dial was hidden by coins and freshly picked daisies. Very strange. Perhaps the person thought it might bring them luck much like a wishing well. Perhaps it was simply something they didn't understand and so imbued it with a mystical meaning of their own. Perhaps I don't know. Answers on a postcard/e-mail please.
